March is traditionally the month of transition in weather, fishing and even South of the Border attitude. The saying is that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb and that pretty much summed up our 2008. We went from the blustery, sporadic winds of late February into March and by the end of the month it was time to have another cerveza.
2008’s Holy Week and Easter celebration was the earliest in nearly 100 years and that was definitely reflected in our guest list for family get-togethers, reunions and the general atmosphere.
Here’s a little remembrance of the days that were and the way it was.
Holy Week
We celebrated Holy Easter Week March 20-23 in what we think of as a traditional manner. Our guests were predominantly from local Baja Families who grew up in the area and always visited the hotel and spa during that time. These people have scattered somewhat, but still return for a touch of sun and sand from LaPaz, San Jose, mainland Mexico or wherever time and tide and taken them. Among our honored Holy Week Guests were –
Zuki Treviño, Yovanka Rebolledo, Hector Moraila, David Rosas, Fernando Leal, Alejandro Centeno, Luis Yuen, Jose Manuel Guereña and Family, Angel Santiago and Family and Cucho Aragon. Julian Guerrero, Jorge Carbo and Luis Mosso brought their families from San Jose for the holidays; all together there were more than 15 people.
If you’re thinking about a 2009 Easter Week family getaway, the date is April 12 with Good Friday on April 10.
Good Groups
Families and businesses used the spring break for a few days of kicking back or brief conferences at the resort.
Longtime friends and guests Norm Jacobson, Jack Cole and Gary Conely, manufacturers of those great Lance Campers were here with about 20 top sales reps for a bit of a thank-you trip and mini sales meeting in our Conference Center. Thank you for choosing us . . . again!
We welcomed Jonathon Batzdorff from Santa Rosa, Calif., with three couples who came to enjoy some quite and relaxing time. And the world renowned architect Carlos Mondragon from Guadalajara, together with 15 family members from La Paz and throughout Baja were here for a Holy Week reunion. The Mondragons are a widely known and recognized family and it was an honor to serve them at our little resort hotel.
Return guests
Guests returned from near and far in an attempt to shake the last vestiges of winter from their bones. Among the early spring arrivals were Frank and Dixie Urabeck , from Bonney Lake, Wash.; (we don’t know where Bonney Lake is, but it sure sounds like a nice place!) There were Edward and Anne Conroy, from Shelton, Wash., visiting their friends Henry and Gloria Boynton, who are members of our Amigos de Spa; Mike Carpenter, from Sacramento, Calif.; Joan Lowry and grandchildren; Katy DeLuna, of McCall, Idaho; Mat Tomlinson, from Colorado; and Robert and Mary Meisse, of Harbor City, Calif.
Togo Hazard, our elder statesman, was here with Kim Eady, from Cayucos, on the Central California Coast; and Ann and Terry Hazard. Togo, never one to let a good fishing day’s get away, fished with his captain, Vicente Cosio, they battled the wind for a few days and came out victorious as they a day with multiple hook ups, still this winter was long and Sr. Togo had seen better days.
We also welcomed David and Leslie Siegle, longtime good friends of the Valdez Family. We were extremely happy to see Dave doing so well. You will continue to be in our prayers.
Up ‘n’ Coming
June 20-22 we’ll play host to a gigantic Barefoot Studio’s international Hatha Yoga training event encompassing everything from the history to elements, techniques, practice and meditation presented by Matthew and Holly Krepps.
Barefoot Studio’s Mathew Krepps was one of the first four yogis in the United States to be certified to teach Dynamic Yoga by Hatha yoga adept Godfrey Devereux. The practices and class divisions at Barefoot are based on the universal principles that Mr. Devereux has distilled throughout his years of extensive practice and teaching. Devereux, who has authored several books on yoga including the acclaimed Dynamic Yoga, created the training method as a distillation and synthesis of the essential elements of classical hatha yoga practice. It is not a new type of Hatha yoga. Its roots are firmly planted in the tradition of practices that originated from the work of Professor Sri T. Krishnamacharya of Mysore, South India. This is the same source from which Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Iyengar Yoga and Viniyoga originated.

In the News
It is always nice when we find out that we have been mentioned in any national magazine. It is always an honor. This time is no different, as we were part of a special section talking about Los Cabos. This in a Travel Agency Magazine.
March is generally a pretty good month for yellowtail fishing, but nobody, and that includes Chuy Valdez, had seen this run of yellowtail for the past 25-30 years. Chuy reminisced early in his opening years that this was the best past time during the winter. To row out to the yellowtail grounds and start jigging for them, catch a few and bring them to grandma to have them cook for lunch. This is one of Chuy's favorite fishing forms, and he couldn't wait to go out and experienced the same fishing as 30 years back.
Boats were fishing just a mile or mile-and-a-half off the dining room and plucking yellows out of the blue sea the third week of March. Most anglers were using live bait of mackerel and sardines, but some were yo-yoing jigs of various shapes and colors. The forked-tail beauties were running up to 40 pounds and that put lots of meat in the freezers.
On this particular day, my dad and Felipe went out 6:45 am and came back at 8:00 o'clock. The catch these 4 beautiful yellowtails.
If you were here, you know what we’re talking about. If you weren’t, well . . . you should have been! It was some blitz!
